Red Coalition takes more legal action against City of Longueuil and its police force

The Red Coalition is taking additional legal action against the City of Longueuil and its police force, hiring human rights law firm Grey Casgrain. The group, which advocates stopping racial profiling, alleges the Longueuil police force has failed to follow court orders from a 2020 racial profiling case against the Longueuil police by Joel DeBellefeuille.  Read More

Community groups urge Quebec to support end to random police stops

A coalition of community groups has urged Premier Legault not to appeal a Quebec Superior Court judgment ordering police to halt random stops and checks of vehicles.They also sent a letter to Public Security Minister François Bonnardel. À la suite du jugement rendu le 25 octobre dernier par le juge Michel Yergeau, le gouvernement du Québec dispose de 30 jours pour contester cette décision. Le regroupement a tenu une conférence de presse lundi, à Québec, pour demander au premier ministre de ne pas aller dans cette direction. «Un appel qui ira jusqu’en Cour suprême, ça prend 5 à 8 ans. Entre-temps, il y a des Québécois et Québécoises racisés qui vont continuer à être profilés», déplore Mbaï-hadji Mbaïrewaye, responsable du profilage racial au Collectif 1629. Un regroupement d'organismes demande au gouvernement de François Legault de ne pas interjeter appel de la décision de la Cour supérieure qui met fin aux interceptions routières sans motif valable, une procédure qui mène au profilage racial. Le 25 octobre dernier, dans une décision rendue par le juge Michel Yergeau sur les interceptions routières sans motif réel au Québec, la Cour supérieure invalidait l’arrêt Ladouceur et, donc, l’article 636 du Code de la sécurité routière qui en découle. Le juge Yergeau renversait une jurisprudence établie il y a plus de 30 ans.  Read More
Rights groups call on Quebec not to appeal ruling on police checks

A group of community organizations representing minorities is calling on the Quebec government not to appeal a recent Superior Court decision against racial profiling by police. The coalition of groups sent a letter to Public Security Minister Francois Bonnardel Monday asking him to take the lead following a recent decision in favour of a Black man who felt he had been racially profiled by police. Officers pulled over Joseph-Christopher Luamba 10 times while driving his car in the 18 months after he got his driver's licence.  Read More
