Group says private school near Montreal ignored racism complaints

A private high school west of Montreal is promising to make changes, following allegations that administrators for years ignored complaints about racist bullying targeting two Black students. Joel DeBellefeuille, founder of Montreal-based anti-racism group Red Coalition, said the family of the two girls approached his organization after administrators brushed off their complaints. “They’ve been trying to tell them that they’ve been spat on, their hair pulled and they’ve been called the N-word on numerous occasions by other students at the school,” DeBellefeuille told reporters Wednesday.  Read More

Calls grow to change streets named after Christopher Columbus on island of Montreal

Anti-racism group accuses Montreal-area school of systemic racism

A Montreal group dedicated to fighting systemic racism and racial profiling is accusing a Montreal-area school of systemic racism. The Red Coalition says young Black students at Collège Bourget in Rigaud, Que., 65 kilometres west of Montreal, are targets of discrimination and racism. They allege that white students at the elementary and secondary school have pulled Black students’ hair, spat on them and called them the N-word.  Read More
Groups to kick off Black History Month with measures to fight racism

Two anti-Black racism groups will kick off Black History Month on Wednesday by outlining measures to fight racism in Quebec, Canada and beyond. They say inaction by all levels of government is contributing to the perpetuation of systemic racism. La Coalition Rouge — représentée par Joel DeBellefeuille, Alain Babineau et Mauro Peña — a rencontré mardi M. Skeete ainsi qu'un représentant de François Bonnardel, ministre de la Sécurité publique, afin de discuter de lutte contre le racisme. Les représentants de la Coalition Rouge affirment que le ministre Skeete a réitéré à plusieurs reprises que le gouvernement majoritaire de la CAQ s'engage à mettre en oeuvre les 24 points d'actions restants sur les 25 points d'action recommandés par le Groupe d'action contre le racisme. La première recommandation mise de l'avant par le premier ministre François Legault est la création du poste de ministre de la Lutte contre le racisme.  Read More
